Day 44 Barn Hill
Well we have decided to stay here for 2 more nights so we
will get into Broome on Friday. The place

is very relaxing, sitting under the
huge white gums, watching the beach and whales swimming by. Today was a busy
day for people coming and going so we had lots to do by sitting there and
watching people pack up and set up. There are some very smart ideas of how to
get a lot of gear into small places.
Back in 80 Mile as we were leaving, I was speaking to an old
guy there who organises the Coast Watch group there. They look after over 350
kms of coast from there all done by volunteers. They get all the equipment
provided (quads, fuel, trailers etc) but do not get subsidised accommodation or
food. I am sure they get a good discount on the fees
Sounds just the job for a retiree who wants to spend some
time up north doing something different, something I would look at if I were to
retire.

and you get to go to all
that coast line by yourself looking for illegal fishing, drug runners and
illegal immigrants.
Our first night here was great fun. As mentioned the toilets
have no roof, so when we went to shower last night, you look up at the stars
and the tree frogs who line up on top of wall and watch you. Maureen was able
to get a picture of one. The showers do not have a bench seat so I could not
sit down to put pants on which led to a streak across
Beast! There were a
number of screams as I headed back, but they were from an owl that lives here
and screeches all night.

We spent part of the day planning our next moves and trying
to work out times and distances and how many days here or there and of course
we will ignore it. We were sitting there having a cuppa when all the spinifex
pigeons came out of the woodwork. I think our pet one has rounded up all his
mates. The birds here are prolific with mudlarks, a new magpie I have not seen
before plus a range of pigeons

and they all come right up to you, no fear. Then
all of a sudden from under the van comes out 3 chooks, fattest and healthiest
chooks I have ever seen. Plodding around scratching and fossicking for grubs,
no worries at all. I would have thought with all the dingoes they would not
survive but here they are.
Gavin’s team – Peel Rebels won their promotional game last
night and they are now going to play top state league hockey. This is good news
and we are really happy for them. This time round, I think they will make a
better go it and I hope they get it all together for next season, just a shame not
to be involved.

We went down to the beach again tonight and watched the sun
go down, it is just a pleasure to have the time to wander down to the beach and
watch the sun go down with a whole group of other people. Back at Girt we have
had tea and we are sitting around listening the owl screech and hunt in the
trees around us.
