Day 72

Day 72 Katherine

A reasonably quiet day today. We left Girt at about 10 as we had to go to the Nitmiluk (Katherine)
Low level crossing

Katherine Gorge
Gorge for a boat tour, well Maureen did. The tour is a boat tour where you have to get off and walk and there was no way I was going to pay full price and then sit and wait for them to come back, no discounts. So when Maureen went off I stayed in the coffee shop and had a coffee and read and watched all the mad hikers come in all sweaty and red faced from their walks and collapse into the seats. It was 40c again today

and at 11 it was at its peak – totally nutty. Maureen was a bit reluctant to go by herself but I said she should go because she will make some friends on the way. Anyway Maureen went off on her tour and as luck would have it, there was a couple near her who she thought she recognised and one had a Mandurah Makos Senior AFL shirt on. It turns out it was an old friend from school and her husband Karin and Rod

Hazell. Karin and I had worked together at school and she had moved to another one and we had kept in touch by e-mail now and again. All the way to the middle of Australia to meet people from home.

The tour was good and Maureen loved the views and the information the guy passed on. The river is fairly low at the moment and when it is wet and full they do a boat trip with a high speed

boat over the rapids that are now dry. They do allow swimming in the river but they also have Salt Water Crocodiles now and again. To test for this they have some croc teasers in the water. Some are cages baited up and they check every day for 6 weeks to see what they catch and others are footballs on ropes. They check these to see if they have been played with by the salties.

Back in the café, we chatted with Karin and Rod and caught up on what they were doing. They had just come from Kakadu and said it was fine, maybe not the best it could be but still good, so it is still on the list. We left them to head South and we headed back to Girt for lunch and a rest. After that we went into town for st as we have booked a night with old friends but is it before or after? We will have our breakfast discussion and Maureen will tell me what we have decided.

some food and then settled down for a swim and dinner. Tomorrow we move on towards Darwin. We are not sure yet if we want to do Kakadu before Darwin or after. I know we have to be in Darwin on the 21
