Day 25

Day 25 Onslow

Goodbye Giralia

On the Walkway
We said goodbye to Giralia at an early hour, 9am and hit the road to Onslow. We had to do a bit of backtracking to Nanaturra road house about 150 Ks but we got there around 11 am. The place was humming, cars everywhere with caravans, trucks and road trains. We loaded up with gas and set off, Maureen had been in the shop and could not believe how much food people were buying, petrol was at $2.05 a litre and a hotdog was $9!

We drove on past the Tom Price turnoff and we were on new road for us. The ground was hilly again after the flat areas we had just been in. The Onslow turnoff was made after about 40 Kms and we headed to Onslow 80Kms away. The road was busy with road trains tacking stuff around. The stuff being taken we are not sure as we could not see the insides but they were coming from “Quarry’s” rather than mine sites.

Salt Loading Jetty
As we got towards Onslow there were the salt mines and all the trucks and cars associated with it, then there was Onslow. We drove through town to our camp site right on the beach. It was a tight fit to get Girt into her home, but we have just about got it sorted, Maureen waves her hands around and I shuffle backwards and forwards until she yells stop. Perfect! Don’t question it, it works.

We then set up and had lunch and chatted to our neighbours. One, an “LT” – Long Termer, was grumbling that the fees had gone up for them to $250 a week from $150. The others are like us who are heading south after the night. We went for a quick drive round town and went to the Wharf and they are obviously doing some work there with huge excavators on barges. Onslow is also a fly in – fly out town and is ramping up the accommodation needs and an example of a quick solution was at the wharf where they have 3 huge catamarans that were dive charter boats and are now used for accommodation for workers!

Back at camp, we had a quick cuppa and then went for what we thought would be a short walk along the foreshore. We started at a small board walk and 1 km later we ended up next to the loading jetty for the salt works. It is also a venue for the local running club with then going back and forth whilst we were there.

We have arrived home and are starting to have tea. The plan for tomorrow is to travel to Dampier tomorrow for 3 days.
